O, Canada! MAGA hat-wearing diner refused restaurant's service

We’ve all heard stories about the MAGA hats. The red, Make America Great Again hats used in Donald Trump’s presidential campaign trigger the emotionally unstable left like nothing else does. I thought this was a uniquely American phenomenon but, alas, that is not the case. The irrational reaction has crossed our northern border into Canada.

The very people that are known for unyielding niceness have some MAGA hat hating folks among them. The manager of a chain restaurant in Vancouver learned a tough lesson when he refused service to a man in a MAGA hat. The man refused to remove his hat when asked to do so by the manager. Saying he has a right to wear the hat, he was told he would not be served, so he left the restaurant. Two days later, the manager was fired over the incident.

Darin Hodge, who was manager of Vancouver’s Stanley Park Teahouse restaurant, said he had “absolutely no regrets” over Tuesday’s incident, which saw him lose his job two days later.

The now unemployed manager bought into the narrative that all Trump supporters are racist, bigoted, Islamophobic, misogynist, homophobic, white supremacists. You know, just like the American left (and their cohorts in the press) believes.

“The MAGA hat has come to symbolise racism, bigotry, islamophobia, misogyny, white supremacy, homophobia.

“As a person with a strong moral backbone, I had to take a stand against this guest’s choice of headwear while in my former place of work. Absolutely no regrets.”

Ah, yes. He possesses “a strong moral backbone”, thus he feels compelled to virtue-signal anyone who dares to disagree with his own personal opinions. Sound familiar? Of course, it does. Just a week ago President Trump’s Press Secretary, Sarah Sanders, was asked to leave a Virginia restaurant as she attempted to enjoy a quiet Friday night dinner with her family. Her offense was to be employed by the president, thus the restaurant’s morally superior staff just didn’t have it within themselves to serve Sanders.

So, this manager lost his job. The upper management decided the man violated the company’s philosophy of tolerance. How’s that for an ironic twist? The virtue-signaler was fired for being intolerant, the very criticism he has for President Trump and his supporters.

But the Sequoia Group of Restaurants, which owns the Teahouse, said Mr Hodge’s refusal of service amounted to a violation of the company’s “philosophy of tolerance”.

“Sequoia does not support intolerance of any kind, and it is because of these principles that we cannot discriminate against someone based on their support for the current administration in the United States or any other bona fide political party,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

You know, something I didn’t understand during the Sarah Sanders dust-up was the Red Hen’s owner claiming she was responding to her staff’s inability to serve Sanders. She is the owner and the staff work for her, not the other way around. Why was she allowing the staff to decide who is and isn’t refused service? Her restaurant’s litmus test for potential patrons is quite a slippery slope. The owner proved to be quite the intolerant human being herself as the rest of the story surfaced. Sarah’s father, former Gov. Mike Huckabee, came forward with the information that the Red Hen’s owner joined others in following the Sanders’ party across the street to eat in a competitor’s establishment. Sarah and her husband had already left to just go to their home so the ones being harassed were her family members.

The Canadian restaurant’s parent company handled the situation correctly. The manager made an irrational decision based solely on his own political beliefs about America’s president. Making every decision in life about politics is not a healthy way to live. It’s also a dumb financial decision for businesses. In today’s equally split political world, why be limited to only half of potential customers?
