The Never Trump chorus is at it again. This time they are garnering attention by way of a new PAC. Republicans for the Rule of Law is the latest anti-Trump attack by Bill Kristol and he’s gathered a few friends to come along on this adventure. They want to save Robert Mueller’s investigation. Here is a description of the nonprofit taken from its website:
Republicans for the Rule of Law is a coalition of Republicans who believe the Special Counsel’s investigation should be completed without political interference. We represent the majority of Republicans who believe Robert Mueller should not be fired.
Republicans for the Rule of Law is a 501c4 nonprofit. Directors: William Kristol, Mona Charen, Linda Chavez, Sarah Longwell, and Andy Zwick.
A petition is up for supporters to sign, so their mailing list for donations will be growing quickly. Lots of quotes from Republican elected officials are used, without context, in support of letting Mueller finish his job.
Mr. President: Firing Robert Mueller would gravely damage the Presidency, the GOP and the country. Please don’t do it.
It’s a simple enough message. I actually agree that Robert Mueller should not be fired, as do a majority of Republicans. According to a Quinnipiac University poll released Tuesday, Republicans support Mueller 55-22 and say the president should not fire him. Americans, in general, say the president should not fire Mueller 69-13.
President Donald Trump should not fire Special Counsel Robert Mueller, American voters say 69 – 13 percent in a Quinnipiac University National Poll released today. Even Republicans say 55 – 22 percent that President Trump should not fire Mueller.
American voters say 52 – 32 percent that Mueller is conducting a “fair” investigation, the lowest level of support for Mueller since the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University Poll first asked this question in November. Republicans say 54 – 30 percent the investigation is not fair. Every other party, gender, education, age and racial group says the investigation is fair.
The poll also shows results indicating that most Americans just don’t care much about this whole thing. Other than political junkies, do you hear regular people bringing Robert Mueller’s investigation into a conversation? I don’t. Does anyone other than the network media looking for ratings care about Stormy Daniels? Trump voters were well aware that he wasn’t exactly a man of high moral character. It mattered more to bring in someone promising to shake things up, do something differently, get results. That is how we got Trump.
So, Republicans for the Rule of Law probably won’t be any more effective than other anti-Trump efforts. Even David Brooks recently wrote in the New York Times about the utter failure of the Never Trump gang. That piece is worth a read. I can’t remember the last time I agreed with Brooks so much.
As Ed points out, who knows if this is really something President Trump would do? It’s fodder for cable news to fill 24/7 programming but so far, little else. Republicans for the Rule of Law has a 30-second spot up on their website. The video has run on Fox and Friends ( a show Trump regularly watches) and on MSNBC’s Morning Joe ( a show that is much less viewed). I imagine if that mailing list gets large enough, we’ll see more of it. It would be safe to say that Trump has seen it. Like he tweeted earlier if he wanted to fire Mueller he would have.
