Planned Parenthood affiliate demands Disney princesses include abortion

In the latest show of madness from the pro-abortion lobby, a Planned Parenthood affiliate in Pennsylvania demands that the popular Disney princesses include one who has had an abortion. Did you have to go back and re-read that sentence? I had to in the story I read. Somehow it is now expected that the fictional Disney characters be relatable to the average young person consuming this product. My first impulse was to label the consumer with a feminine distinction but I wouldn’t want to be called gender biased. Yeah, that’s how nuts this stuff is getting.

So, Planned Parenthood Keystone decided to take part in a meme making the rounds on Twitter – “We need a Disney princess … “.  Apparently, this meme has been going on for several months but recently sparked renewed interest when Planned Parenthood Keystone jumped in with its response and then one hour later had to delete the tweet. That’s how bad it was.  @PPKeystone offered no apology, just deleted the tweet as though it never happened. The affiliate did, though, issue a statement.

“We joined an ongoing Twitter conversation about the kinds of princesses people want to see in an attempt to make a point about the importance of telling stories that challenge stigma and championing stories that too often don’t get told,” branch president Melissa Reed said in a statement. “Upon reflection, we decided that the seriousness of the point we were trying to make was not appropriate for the subject matter or context, and we removed the tweet.” 

Thanks to one observant guy on Twitter, though, the tweet lives on.

That’s right.  Why stop at abortion? The princesses must also be pro-choice, an illegal alien, a union worker and also transgender. What? No handicapped?  What other categories did they miss? Now, if Disney created a transgendered union worker working illegally after having an abortion, well, imagine the sales figures on that character’s marketing campaigns.

Disney princesses appeal to a young audience worldwide. This is a hugely popular, and lucrative, market. The Disney movies and the products sold – dolls, accessories, clothing, etc. –  are a normal part of any young child’s fantasy world. And, yes, the audience is girls. So, Planned Parenthood Keystone went about making it all about sexual politics and doing the bidding of the abortion industry. It should also not get lost in the shuffle that these are fictional characters. Why must fictional characters be expected to be like regular people? The whole idea of fantasy is to escape real life.

Why can’t kids just be kids anymore? Let them watch movies and sing along to all the songs that later live in their parents’ heads far too long. Let them dream about a different life, another world. Politics will dominate their worlds soon enough, it doesn’t have to begin at the pre-school level.

Also included in the statement published in the Washington Post, Planned Parenthood Keystone tries to justify their heavy-handed move. It lands with a thud, too.

“Planned Parenthood believes that pop culture — television shows, music, movies — has a critical role to play in educating the public and sparking meaningful conversations around sexual and reproductive health issues and policies, including abortion,” the branch president said. “We also know that emotionally authentic portrayals of these experiences are still extremely rare — and that’s part of a much bigger lack of honest depictions of certain people’s lives and communities.”

My first experience with a Disney princess was going to see the movie Snow White at the movie theatre as a young child.  Did I ever think there was really such a person in real life? No, the thought never entered my head. There is value in entertainment for entertainment’s sake, no political message needed. I also enjoyed Cinderella but that’s about all we had back in my day. Today there are many fictional princesses. I say the more, the better. Just keep politics out of it.
