Chicago: Concealed Carry holder surprises three would-be robbers

A trio of teens looking for victims to rob in Chicago wound up being victims themselves. This is officially a case of f**k around and find out.

A 56-year-old man was in his vehicle in the 4700-block of West Arthington Street in Lawndale just before 6 a.m., when a vehicle with three male teenagers approached, CPD said.

One of the teens got out of the vehicle, pointed a gun at the victim and demanded his belongings, police said.

A struggle ensued before the victim, a FOID and CCL holder, pulled out his weapon and fired several rounds, according to CPD.

The teens, who the story says were between 15 and 18, were all injured. The driver was shot in the head as he tried to drive away and crashed the car. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition:

A second teen who was riding in the backseat broke his leg during the crash and was transported to an area hospital in fair condition, police said.

The third teen was found several blocks away with a gunshot wound to the shoulder, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital where he was listed in serious condition…

The concealed carry holder was not injured during the incident.

Looking at multiple sources for this story I noticed that this is just one of several incidents like this in Chicago recently. Two weeks ago there was a very similar incident involving a 23-year-old woman who was sitting in her car when another vehicle with four men inside pulled up.

…four men got out of a black sedan, and one of them tried to open her car door while flashing a gun.

The woman, who has a concealed carry license, shot that man in the head, then ran off from her car.

Another of the would-be carjackers shot the woman in the left arm.

And about a week before that there was another incident in which the robber was shot by a concealed carry permit holder. Unfortunately the robber also killed a clerk at the store:

According to CPD, a man walked into the store and pulled out a gun to start a robbery. A Good Samaritan who CPD said has valid FOID and CCL cards also pulled out a gun and shot the would-be robber.

The would-be robber fired back and struck a third person, the employee who he targeted to rob, police said.

The robber died at the scene and the 64-year-old grocery clerk he shot later died at the hospital. The concealed carry permit holder was unharmed.

This sort of thing happens a lot and not just in Chicago obviously. Last month the Heritage Foundation wrote about a series of incidents in which guns were used for defensive purposes in the month of October:

  • Oct. 3, Hartford, Connecticut: When two armed carjackers ambushed a driver and tried to steal his car at gunpoint, police said, the driver—a concealed carry permit holder—drew his own handgun and exchanged fire with the carjackers, killing one and wounding the other. Although injured, the driver was expected to recover…
  • Oct. 7, Upper Southampton, Pennsylvania: Authorities said three men attacked a concealed carry permit holder as he walked to his vehicle outside a bar, repeatedly punching him in the face and knocking him down. The permit holder retrieved his firearm and shot at his assailants, fatally striking two and wounding the third before calling 911.
  • Oct. 21, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania: A homeowner shot and wounded an intruder who kicked in his back door in the middle of the afternoon and then refused his order to leave, police said. The wounded intruder fled, but police found him nearby as he walked down a street carrying a large butcher knife. Police charged him with felony trespassing, attempted burglary, and making terroristic threats.
  • Oct. 22, Las Vegas, Nevada: When a mentally disturbed man broke into a home, grabbed a kitchen knife, and threatened to kill everyone inside, the homeowner and his wife barricaded themselves in a second-floor bedroom. Police said the homeowner grabbed his gun and fired a warning shot, but the intruder continued trying to force his way inside. The homeowner fired the next round through the door, striking the man in the leg. Police arrested the intruder, who they said was the subject of several 911 calls that night and may have tried to break into other homes.

That’s only a third of the incidents listed by Heritage but you get the idea. The national media only wants to talk about guns when there’s a mass shooting by a deranged person. But quite often there are situations where violent or deranged people are prevented from doing harm to innocent people by responsible gun owners.
