BLM Los Angeles co-founder: 'We can never believe police...over Jussie Smollett' (Update)

The media has spent years downplaying the extremism of Black Lives Matter. For instance, is it true that the national organization was founded and continues to be run by Marxists who were fans of Mao’s Little Red Book? Why yes it is and Patrisse Cullors will tell you so in her own words. But strangely, that fact gets little attention outside of conservative news sites like this one. Is she also a hypocrite buying up multiple houses. Yes she is, but again that didn’t get much attention from the mainstream press. When BLM put something on their homepage about disrupting the nuclear family ? Yes they did and it went unnoticed by most of the media even after they pulled it down.

Evidence that the group is made up of extremists never seems to cut through which means this story probably won’t garner much media attention either. One of the co-founders of the LA chapter of BLM, Dr. Melina Abdullah, put out a statement yesterday on the group’s website about the Jussie Smollett trial. She labels the trial a “white supremacist charade” and then says the only fact that matters is that “we can never believe police.”

As abolitionists, we approach situations of injustice with love and align ourselves with our community. Because we got us. So let’s be clear: we love everybody in our community. It’s not about a trial or a verdict decided in a white supremacist charade, it’s about how we treat our community when corrupt systems are working to devalue their lives. In an abolitionist society, this trial would not be taking place, and our communities would not have to fight and suffer to prove our worth. Instead, we find ourselves, once again, being forced to put our lives and our value in the hands of judges and juries operating in a system that is designed to oppress us, while continuing to face a corrupt and violent police department, which has proven time and again to have no respect for our lives.

In our commitment to abolition, we can never believe police, especially the Chicago Police Department (CPD) over Jussie Smollett, a Black man who has been courageously present, visible, and vocal in the struggle for Black freedom. While policing at-large is an irredeemable institution, CPD is notorious for its long and deep history of corruption, racism, and brutality. From the murders of Fred Hampton and Mark Clark, to the Burge tortures, to the murder of Laquan McDonald and subsequent cover-up, to the hundreds of others killed by Chicago police over the years and the thousands who survived abuse, Chicago police consistently demonstrate that they are among the worst of the worst. Police lie and Chicago police lie especially.

Black Lives Matter will continue to work towards the abolition of police and every unjust system. We will continue to love and protect one another, and wrap our arms around those who do the work to usher in Black freedom and, by extension, freedom for everyone else.

The statement closes with the image of Smollett above. Basically her argument boils down to: He’s on our side and the police are the enemy. The actual facts of what happened are irrelevant to Dr. Abdullah.

This isn’t the first time she’s expressed her distaste for police. In a discussion hosted by the Washington Post in 2018, she explained why she would never agree to engage in a public conversation with a police officer. “My goal is not to make kinder slave-catchers,” she said. She added, “I live for the day when [policing] is gone and they call all be retrained for something else.” In other words, she was for abolishing the police years before “defund the police” became a BLM goal.

I’ve gone back to this insight from James Lindsay many times before because I think it’s fundamental. The woke aren’t interested in debate. You can see it clearly in Dr. Abdullah’s whole approach. She doesn’t want to discuss policing or the Smollett trial with anyone who knows anything about those two topics. She just wants to push out her own extreme narrative to whoever will listen.

Again, the point here is not really to focus on one individual so much as it is to point out, once again, that BLM is a group founded and organized by far-left extremists who have goals not supported by the overwhelming majority of Americans, including black Americans who do not support abolishing the police. The media turns a blind eye to this extremism because reporters and editors know that showing their readers and viewers just how extreme these leaders are would harm a movement those same progressive journalists support. They can keep ignoring it all they want but the evidence of extremism isn’t hard to find for anyone who bothers to look.

Update: Dr. Abdullah has a radio show called Move the Crowd. Monday (Dec. 6) she hosted Gina Belafonte, a friend of the Smollett family, who claimed he was a victim of both the racists who attacked him and the police. “You’re not even safe in places like Chicago,” Abdullah said.
