Rep. Rashida Tlaib was a guest columnist for Louis Farrakhan’s Final Call newspaper in 2006. Author Jeryl Bier broke the story at his new site The Script:

The article appears to have been written specifically for The Final Call; an online search did not turn up any evidence of the article elsewhere. The article is entitled “Bills must stop deportations for minor offenses” and addressed the problem of legal immigrants deported for technicalities and other relatively minor issues. The author bio included with the article reads “(Rashida Tlaib, advocacy coordinator of the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS) in Detroit.)”

The full article from the Final Call is here. Farrakhan is one of America’s leading anti-Semites. He routinely demonizes Jews in his speeches (among others). He made news last August when he said, “I’m Not An Anti-Semite. I’m Anti-Termite.” Anyone writing for the Final Call would have been aware of Farrakhan’s rhetoric about Jews.

Rep. Tlaib has recently made news with her comments about Israel. For instance, last month she said this about supporters of an anti-BDS Senate Bill: “They forgot what country they represent.”

There is a well-worn anti-Semitic trope, i.e. American Jews have a divided loyalty. Also, last November, CNN contributor Marc Lamont Hill was fired after giving a speech in which he called for a “free Palestine from the river to the sea.” The ADL pointed out that the phrase is tantamount to calling for the end of Israel. From the Jewish Journal:

Sharon Nazarian, the Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) senior vice president for international affairs, told the Journal in an email, “Those calling for ‘from the river to the sea’ are calling for an end to the State of Israel.”

“It is a shame that once again, this annual event at the United Nations does not promote constructive pathways to ‘Palestinian solidarity’ and a future of peace, but instead divisive and destructive action against Israel,” Nazarian said.

Similarly, Simon Wiesenthal Center Associate Dean Rabbi Abraham Cooper told the Journal in an email, “Justice requires a ‘Free Palestine from the River to the Sea’? Marc Lamont Hill is a confirmed anti-Zionist ideologue. His extremist, anti-peace views merit coverage on CNN, not as a paid pundit but as a supreme propagandist unfettered by facts.”

But Rep. Tlaib defended Hill claiming nothing he’d said was anti-Semitic.

She has also called for cutting military aid to Israel and seemingly abandoned a two-state solution in the Middle East.

Rep. Tlaib is one of two Muslim women who were elected to Congress last year. The other, Rep. Ilhan Omar, is also making news today for anti-Semitic comments.
