The downside of this story is that Hillary Clinton is almost certainly going to weigh in with some snarky response that was carefully weighed and voted on by her staff. The obvious choice would be “lock her up” but Clinton probably won’t go for that because it’s been a source of left-wing outrage for so long. Using it now would suggest all that outrage wasn’t sincere. But whatever Hillary’s team comes up with, you can bet it’s going to be awful. The upside here is we’re finally about to learn from Democrats how bad it is for people in government to skirt federal record-keeping laws. From the Washington Post:
Ivanka Trump sent hundreds of emails last year to White House aides, Cabinet officials and her assistants using a personal account, many of them in violation of federal records rules, according to people familiar with a White House examination of her correspondence…
The discovery alarmed some advisers to President Trump, who feared that his daughter’s practices bore similarities to the personal email use of Hillary Clinton, an issue he made a focus of his 2016 campaign. Trump attacked his Democratic challenger as untrustworthy and dubbed her “Crooked Hillary” for using a personal email account as secretary of state.
Some aides were startled by the volume of Ivanka Trump’s personal emails — and taken aback by her response when questioned about the practice. Trump said she was not familiar with some details of the rules, according to people with knowledge of her reaction.
I don’t know how anyone could not be aware of this issue after all the discussion of it in the past two years. That said, most of the emails we’re talking about here had to do with family logistics and none contained classified information according to a spokesman for Trump’s attorney:
“Ms. Trump did not create a private server in her house or office, no classified information was ever included, the account was never transferred at Trump Organization, and no emails were ever deleted,” Mirijanian said…
Trump used her personal account to discuss government policies and official business fewer than 100 times — often replying to other administration officials who contacted her through her private email, according to people familiar with the review.
Another category of less-substantive emails may have also violated the records law: hundreds of messages related to her official work schedule and travel details that she sent herself and personal assistants who cared for her children and house, they said.
You can get a sense of the kind of thing we’re talking about by looking at the emails already published by American Oversight, the group that filed the records request for Ivanka’s email interactions with government officials.
The final word from Democrats on Hillary Clinton’s private server was that she didn’t really do anything wrong, despite the many emails on her server which contained information which was classified at the time it was sent, even top secret information. Ivanka’s use of email isn’t the same in intent or in scope so this should be even less of a nothing-burger, right? Probably not if the reactions on Twitter are any indication. What matters now is that a chance to settle a score has presented itself. It’s going to be a long week.
Dear @IvankaTrump,
I will be on @TheLastWord to discuss your use of a private email for government work. I have some thoughts. Please tune in.— Neera Tanden (@neeratanden) November 20, 2018
Hmmm…. Ivanka Trump used a private email to discuss government business. #LockHerUp?? https://t.co/ofC3HEafZB

So let me get this straight. @IvankaTrump gets to decide which emails are personal and which are official business, and without any outside review, such as FBI investigation, gets to declare to media that only 100 or so were about official business? Anyone see #doublestandard?

You can’t make this stuff up. Not after that gang did the “Lock Her Up!” chant against Hillary for two solid years so Ivanka could become First Daughter. Above the law, just like daddy. Disgusting hardly says it.https://t.co/R9CfZWX2tT
