Rose McGowan has become one of the leaders of the #MeToo movement but in an interview with the London Times over the weekend she discussed how she has been shunned by people within her own industry, including those who loudly support #MeToo. From the Washington Post:

“I just think they’re douchebags,” McGowan said, referring to other celebrity #MeToo supporters in an interview published Sunday. “They’re not champions. I just think they’re losers. I don’t like them. How do I explain the fact that I got a GQ Man of the Year award and no women’s magazines and no women’s organizations have supported me?”

McGowan added she has also been left out of what the Times described as “#MeToo campaign lunches or survivors’ brunches.”

“And I don’t want to go, because it’s all bullsh-t,” she said. “It’s a lie. It’s a Band-Aid lie to make them feel better. I know these people, I know they’re lily-livered, and as long as it looks good on the surface, to them, that’s enough.”

McGowan went on to say that while she is not a supporter of President Trump, she thinks his supporters are right about Hollywood:

“They hate Hollywood for being faux liberals. They’re 100 percent right about that,” she said. “It’s a bunch of faux liberals. It’s crap, and they know it is deep down, but they’re living an empty life, and to me that’s their punishment. They get to live the lives they live.”

McGowan has said she won’t act in Hollywood productions again, so she’s got very little to lose by badmouthing the industry. I guess that’s what it takes for someone to be really honest, i.e. being shunned and disrespected by the Hollywood elite. Only then can someone admit what seems obvious to many outside the bubble: Hollywood is full of faux, limousine liberals. Very few people still working in the industry would dare to say something like this.

One of the people McGowan has criticized in the past (and again in this interview) is actress Meryl Streep. Streep starred in several films produced by Weinstein but claims she didn’t know anything about his behavior. Last December she gave a statement to Huffington Post which said:

It hurt to be attacked by Rose McGowan in banner headlines this weekend, but I want to let her know I did not know about Weinstein’s crimes, not in the 90s when he attacked her, or through subsequent decades when he proceeded to attack others.

I wasn’t deliberately silent. I didn’t know. I don’t tacitly approve of rape. I didn’t know. I don’t like young women being assaulted. I didn’t know this was happening.

Other people who were around Weinstein at the time said that everyone knew his reputation and that he was overly-aggressive with women, though not that he was raping women.

After getting some pushback, McGowan felt the need to clarify what she’d said in the interview about #MeToo:

I never said #MeToo is a lie. Ever. I was talking about Hollywood and Time’s Up, not #MeToo. Ugh. I’m so tired of erroneous sh*tstorms. #MeToo is about survivors and their experiences, that cannot be taken away.
