Lisa Page to testify in closed session this Wednesday

Peter Strzok’s favorite text-buddy will be testifying before two congressional committees this Wednesday, but the testimony will take place in closed session. From ABC News:

The House Judiciary Committee has issued a subpoena for Lisa Page, the former FBI lawyer who exchanged text messages with FBI agent Peter Strzok critical of then-presidential candidate Donald Trump, to appear on Capitol Hill for a closed-door interview Wednesday morning, according to congressional officials familiar with the subpoena…

Page’s attorney Amy Jeffress said they have been “working with the Committee staff to arrange Lisa’s voluntary appearance,” suggesting her client needs more time to prepare for an interview.

“We asked the Committee staff to explain the scope of the investigation and provide sufficient notice that would allow her to prepare, which are normal conditions for congressional committees, but these committees have not followed the normal process,” Jeffress said in a statement. “The FBI has agreed to provide Lisa with her notes and other documents to allow her to prepare, but they have not provided those documents to date, so we are still waiting to work out a reasonable date for her interview.”

Strzok gave similar testimony behind closed doors last month. But soon after his testimony was complete various accounts of it were leaked to the media. CNN’s Manu Raju got the spin from a few Democrats and one Republican:

Page’s testimony is set for 10 am, so you can expect more leaks of this kind sometime Wednesday afternoon. But Page will likely be overshadowed a bit by the public testimony of Peter Strzok which is scheduled for Thursday:

FBI agent Peter Strzok, whose disparaging text messages about President Donald Trump prompted his removal from the ongoing inquiry into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, is to give public testimony Thursday at a joint meeting of House committees…

Angered by lawmakers’ selective leaks of that meeting, Strzok’s lawyer has called for the full transcript of that testimony to be released before Thursday’s session. Strzok was subpoenaed earlier this week to testify publicly.

Of course, there were at least as many leaks coming from Democrats as from Republicans after his testimony, but I bet Strzok was upset about those leaks.

As for Page, she left her job at the FBI in May, so there’s not as much on the line for her. And between her and Strzok, she seems to dislike Trump more but Strzok was the one who raised the “insurance policy” idea and the one who promised he would “stop” Trump from being elected. Still, it will be interesting to see what she can offer about comments like this under questioning: “Are you even going to give out your calendars? Seems kind of depressing. Maybe it should just be the first meeting of the secret society.”
