It took more than three years but the Gosnell movie produced by Ann McElhinney and Phelim McAleer with support from an IndieGoGo campaign is finally coming to theaters. From the Hollywood Reporter:
The executive producer called it “a really hard road,” but Gosnell: The Trial of America’s Biggest Serial Killerwill open in as many as 750 theaters in October through a distribution deal with GVN Releasing, the filmmakers said Tuesday.
The movie stars Dean Cain as the lead detective who pursued the case of Kermit Gosnell, the Philadelphia abortion doctor who is serving a life sentence for the murder of three infants and the involuntary manslaughter of one of his adult patients…
The movie, directed by Nick Searcy, also explores how Gosnell got away with a crime spree that allegedly lasted for many years because bureaucrats and reporters were uninterested in investigating claims made against the doctor.
Gosnell’s trial also became a national talking point when photos of an empty press gallery began to circulate, and the filmmakers explored this phenomenon as well.
The media response to this was certainly one of the most noteworthy things about the trial. One Washington Post reporter (now at Vox) infamously referred to it as a “local crime story” despite the fact that Gosnell is probably the most prolific serial killer in American history and the fact that abortion clinic regulation is a story with obvious national implications. Then there was this famous image of the courtroom during the trial:

Here are the producers announcing the distribution deal:
Finally, here’s an interview from last year in which Ann and Phelim talk to Mark Steyn about the Gosnell book and the movie. This is fairly long but don’t miss the part near the middle where Ann describes how Gosnell kept putting his hands on her during a 2-hour prison interview. This guy is in prison for murdering 3 infants but still thinks he’s done nothing wrong and that he’s a real charmer.
