Jennifer Lawrence is taking a year off acting to 'fix' America

Well, it seemed as if America was in trouble there for a while, but now our problems are about to be solved. Jennifer Lawrence, currently doing a promotional tour for a movie in which she plays a Russian spy, has announced she’s taking a onr-year hiatus from acting in order to work on fixing America’s political problems. If she could fix Panem, how hard could it be? From WJLA:

“I’m going to take the next year off,” Lawrence outlined. “I’m going to be working with this organization as a part of (anti-corruption organization) Represent.US… trying to get young people engaged politically on a local level.

“It doesn’t have anything to do with partisan (politics). It’s just anti-corruption and stuff trying to pass state by state laws that can help prevent corruption, fix our democracy.”…

The “Joy” star also told Oprah Winfrey in an interview for The Hollywood Reporter in December that she had become obsessed with politics since Donald Trump had become president of the United States.

“My political passion has almost turned into an obsession. I mean, I don’t think you ever do feel settled, (but) as soon as you feel settled with your home and your personal life, you’re looking at the world and going, ‘How in the hell do I fix this? What do we do?’” she explained.

Like her character in the Hunger Games films, Lawrence is the face of an effort that already exists. It’s called represent.us and it’s an ambitious plan to unite the districts against the capital. Actually, it really is a plan to build local power and gradually work up to the state level and finally make federal changes to everything from election law to the electoral college. You can read a summary of the plan here.

Both Lawrence and Represent.Us are making a real effort to avoid any partisan labels but a lot of the individual elements of this plan all seem to be things championed by the left. Getting rid of the electoral college was very much a thing on the left after Trump’s election. (And we know who would have benefitted most from that change in 2016.) Automatic voter registration (formerly Moter Voter) and federal funding of campaigns are both efforts that have been pushed by the left. This is a plan that explicitly says repealing Citizens United (another left-wing cause) is thinking too small. So, marketing aside, this looks like a grab-bag of left-wing electoral reforms.

The group has already produced a bunch of slick videos which seemed aimed at young people with short attention spans. If you have five minutes to hear their pitch, here it is.
