The Lincoln Memorial was vandalized with red spray paint overnight. The person who felt inspired to leave a personal rant on one of America’s greatest national monuments wasn’t able to put together two coherent words, so it may take an arrest to figure out why this happened. From NBC News:

The words “F— law” were found written in red spray paint early Tuesday on a pillar at the monument that overlooks the Capitol building and National Mall, NPS said Tuesday afternoon. The graffiti was found about 4:30 a.m.

Work to remove the words is underway. A preservation crew is using a “mild, gel-type architectural paint stripper” to remove the paint without damaging the stone. The crew is applying a layer of the gel, rinsing it, checking how effective it was and repeating as necessary.

Additional vandalism, in silver spray paint, was found on a sign on the 1400 block of Constitution Avenue. Any words were indecipherable.

According to a statement from the National Park Service, that reads “F— law.” So this could be the work of an anarchist just looking to deface an American monument. And in light of the recent toppling of a statue in Durham, one might think this is another left-wing attack on a monument. But the message is actually pretty hard to decipher. No doubt about the first three letters so we can probably assume the fourth, but after that, it’s a mess.

On Twitter, some on the left are suggesting it reads “F— Islam.” That would make this the work of some right-winger presumably. But again, I’m not convinced. Could that last “W” actually be an “M”? I guess maybe but that final upstroke seems pretty clear (making it a W).

Most of the people responding to this on Twitter are just angry about it even if they’re not sure who is responsible. The Park Service undoubtedly has video surveillance of the monument so hopefully, the person responsible was caught on camera and can be identified and arrested.
