Rep. Chaffetz on Democratic calls to investigate Rep. Nunes: 'That's ridiculous'

Rep. Jason Chaffetz, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, says the calls by Democrats for an investigation of House Intelligence Chairman Rep. Devin Nunes are “ridiculous.”

Chaffetz appeared on Greta Van Susteren’s show on MSNBC Tuesday where he was asked about Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings’s call for an investigation into Rep. Nunes. “Oh, that’s ridiculous,” Chaffetz said, adding, “Come on that’s a silly reason. It doesn’t even pass the basic sniff test.”

Chaffetz went on to offer a defense of Rep. Nunes saying Democrats, “may say that he made a mistake on this or that, but Devin Nunes is a man of high integrity.” He continued, “He’s done a great job chairing a very difficult committee; has the full confidence of the Republican conference, the Republican leadership and myself and Trey Gowdy and a host of others. I think that’s silly.”

Silly or not, the media is in a feeding frenzy right now on this story and Democrats are doing their best to take advantage of it. Here’s what the New York Times wrote about this yesterday [emphasis added]:

The revelation that Mr. Nunes had viewed intelligence materials on White House grounds the day before bolstering the administration’s case fueled damaging speculation that he was acting at the instruction of the president. That could prove fatal to the bipartisan investigation, which has hinged on the ability of Mr. Nunes to conduct a neutral inquiry while maintaining the trust and cooperation of Mr. Schiff.

Notice the Times doesn’t really clarify who is doing the speculating, why those individuals might be making such speculations, or why those speculations might be completely unfounded. The story this week has been Democrats screaming for Nunes to step aside on the basis of their own speculation which they are continually pushing into the media. Now we’ve reached the point where Democrats are calling for Rep. Nunes himself to be investigated based, once again, on their own speculation about sinister motives for which they have zero evidence at this point.

Chaffetz is right. Without something more than wild speculation to go on, calls to investigate Rep. Nunes are silly.
