House Oversight to look into Kellyanne Conway's promotion of Ivanka Trump

Earlier today, Allahpundit wrote about Kellyanne Conway’s promotion of Ivanka Trump’s merchandise line while standing in the White House with a White House placard in the back ground. A short time later the Office of Government Ethics reported it was receiving an “extraordinary volume of contacts.”

The OGE also clarified it was not in a position to conduct investigations:

The call for an investigation from Congress didn’t take long. Rep. Elijah Cummings, the ranking minority member on the House Oversight Committee, sent a letter to Chairman Jason Chaffetz today asking the committee to “refer for review and potential disciplinary action” Conway’s statements. The Associated Press reports that Chaffetz was unequivocal about Conway’s statement being “wrong, wrong, wrong.” Chaffetz has already agreed to work with Rep. Cummings to address the matter:

House Oversight Chairman Jason Chaffetz says White House counselor Kellyanne Conway’s promotion of Ivanka Trump’s fashion brand was “wrong, wrong, wrong, clearly over the line, unacceptable.”

The Republican congressman said the White House must refer the matter to the Office of Government Ethics for review. He said he and Democratic Oversight Leader Elijah Cummings are writing a letter to the office and he will also write to President Donald Trump about the matter.

“It needs to be dealt with,” he told The Associated Press. “There’s no ifs, ands or buts about it.”

Also today, White House spokesman Sean Spicer was asked about Conway’s statements during the daily press briefing and would only say that Conway had been “counseled.”

Conway is obviously a smart and accomplished woman. Unfortunately, this is the second gaffe she’s made in as many weeks. The one about the “Bowling Green massacre” was embarrassing, though there was no evidence of any intent to deceive.

Are Democrats milking this for all its worth? Of course, but in this case Conway seems to have gift-wrapped the opportunity for them.
