Report: Trump administration clamping down on some government social media accounts

According to a report at Politico, social media accounts belonging to federal agencies like the EPA and USDA are being restricted by the incoming Trump administration. Case in point, earlier today an account for Badlands National Park tweeted out some climate change information but all of those tweets were later deleted:

Politico reports the disappearance of those tweets is in line with guidance being sent out to some agencies about how they are to use their social media accounts:

At EPA, the lockdown extends well beyond formal coordinated messaging. Aside from a block on any press releases and social media posts, a Monday memo circulated internally and obtained by POLITICO warned that EPA employees scheduled to speak at public events like conferences in the next month must alert Trump’s team of temporary political appointees…

Separately, employees of the USDA’s Agriculture Research Service received a memo Monday from branch chief of staff Sharon Drumm telling them that the release of documents, including “but not limited to, news releases, photos, fact sheets, news feeds and social media content,” would be held until further notice.

Progressives at these agencies are worried about what this portends. “It’s a dark time right now,” Liz Purchia, the former head of the EPA public affairs office tells Politico. “People are nervous and they are scared about what they can and can’t do. They don’t want to get in trouble and they want to do the right thing,” she adds.

But as Politico notes, such efforts to control what is being sent out by federal agencies are not unique to this administration. Trump spokesman Sean Spicer tells Politico, “I don’t think there’s any surprise that when there’s an administration turnover, we’re going to review the policies.” And, let’s be honest here, the Trump administration does not want progressives in these agencies joining ‘the resistance’ using government social media accounts.
