The Jester leaves message on Russian government website: 'Knock it off'

The hacker known as the Jester left a message on a Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website Friday. From CNN Money:

“Comrades! We interrupt regular scheduled Russian Foreign Affairs Website programming to bring you the following important message,” he wrote. “Knock it off. You may be able to push around nations around you, but this is America. Nobody is impressed.”

MID.ru is the official website of the Russian agency that is in charge of maintaining that country’s international diplomacy — equivalent to the U.S. Department of State.

His hacking of the website included this gag: Visitors are subjected to the ear-piercing sound of an American civil alert message — that shrieking dial tone that accompanies emergency weather broadcasts.

The hack was a response to the meddling in the 2016 election, including hacks of Democratic organizations like the DNC and DCCC, but also to the DDoS attack which knocked major sites offline last week. Russia has denied involvement with any of these attacks, but the Jester’s message said, “Let’s get real, I know it’s you, even if by-proxy, and you know it’s you. Now, get to your room. Before I lose my temper.”

The Jester told CNN Money why he attacked the Russian site in an interview this weekend. “I wanted to poke them in the eye and stop feeling like US is just taking it on the chin,” he said. He added, “I’m not gonna sit around watching these f—-rs laughing at us.”

The Obama administration has been saying this month that it is planning a “proportional” response to Russian meddling in the U.S. election. It did not reveal what form that response might take.

Not much is known about the Jester’s identity. He is ex-military and, as in this case, has always appeared to have patriotism as a motivation for his actions online. He is best known for taking down hundreds of Islamic jihad related websites and for helping to expose Sabu, leader of the hacking group LulzSec.
