Black Lives Matter upset about memo telling Democrats to partner with the radical movement

This week a hacker calling himself Guccifer 2.0 (who is probably a Russian propaganda front) released a memo from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee on how to deal with Black Lives Matter. The two page memo includes advice on how to deal with the group including “lead from behind” and warning Dems not to mention “black-on-black crime.” Fox News reports on the response from Black Lives Matter:

On its Facebook page, BLM said officials should “stop pacifying” them.

“We are disappointed at the DCCC’s placating response to our demand to value all Black life. Black communities deserve to be heard, not handled. People are dying,” the organization said, in response to the leaked document.

The left-wing media has generally treated the document as an affront to the group. Mic’s headline for a story about the memo was, “Now we know what the Democratic Party really thinks of Black Lives Matter.” At Vox the headline was, “Democrats are embracing Black Lives Matter. But a leaked memo puts their motivations into question.”

Actually, the memo reads like a near-complete capitulation to Black Lives Matter. It does describe the group as “radical” but that’s not really a stretch at this point, is it? Can you really call a group that routinely chants the words of one of the FBI’s most wanted list mainstream?

Under the heading “Tactics” the memo tells Democrats “offer to meet with local activists” and “listen to their concerns.” The memo also urges Dems to “lead from behind” which, in context, means not to try and co-opt the movement but to become a silent partner. What more could BLM ask for than a major party telling its members to follow their lead and not try to co-opt them?

Democrats are warned against using the phrase “all lives matter” and “black-on-black crime” as this will “only anger BLM activists.” The memo concludes with a list of talking points Democrats can use when talking to BLM or to the media. These include lines such as, “A history of systemic racism continues to confront the lives of African Americans.”

So what exactly is it that BLM is upset about here? The only negative line in the entire memo is “Don’t offer support for concrete policy positions.” Based on this line, some are treating the entire memo as a case of offering the group lip service. But, really, what more could they ask?

Democrats featured the “Mothers of the Movement” at their national convention. The memo suggests an open door policy to the group. All that’s lacking here is power to dictate policy. Presumably, BLM wanted this internal memo to say something like, ‘Offer support for whatever policy suggestions BLM makes.’ That would be a pretty big ask given some of the demands the group has made in the past year.

Contrary to most of the coverage, what this hacked memo shows is that the Democrats have been almost completely co-opted by Black Lives Matter.
