Shooting at Munich shopping mall (Update: 9 dead)

Update: There were 9 killed, 10 if you include the gunman.

Update: Police now say 8 have died:

Update: I noted below some reports circulating that the shooter (one of the shooters) was yelling about foreigners and may have been connected to neo-Nazis. Here’s the counter-report. A woman who was in the McDonalds with her 8-year-old son claims her son saw the man loading his gun in the bathroom. She also tells CNN she heard the man shout “Allahu Akbar” as he shot at children:

So there are clearly conflicting reports. Which one is right? We just don’t know at this moment. Authorities have yet to say anything about the motive of the shooter/shooters beyond this:

Update: Video of one suspect firing on a group of people outside a McDonalds (police have said there may be 3 shooters):

Update: Police have confirmed 6 people were killed: “Update:   : – unknown number of injured – unfortunately, we have recorded already 6 dead people!”

As I’m typing this, Fox News is running a press conference from Germany where authorities just said 5 were killed. So even this seems to be in question.

There are also reports circulating of a second shooting in another party of the city but police are still saying those reports are not confirmed.

As to the identity of the shooters, there are reports circulating that a shooters may have been shouting about foreigners. Some have suggested the shooter/shooters may be connected with the far-right. That has not been confirmed yet.

[End update.]

A shooting has taken place at a Munich, Germany shopping mall. Several people were reportedly killed by as many as three shooters (though of course early reports are often wrong about the number of shooters involved). Police have not caught any suspects yet. They are telling the public to shelter in place and avoid public areas. From CNN:

Gunfire rang out at a shopping mall in the German city of Munich on Friday evening, leaving several people dead and others wounded, CNN affiliate NTV reported.

The shooting, which started at about 6 p.m. local time at the Olympia shopping mall, is over, police spokeswoman Claudia Kvenzel said. Kvenzel had no immediate information about casualties or what led to the shooting.

That report certainly makes it sound as if this is over but the official Munich police Twitter feed posted this after the CNN story went up. (Note: These messages were initially posted in German and then a few minutes later were posted again in English.)

Police also just published a statement on Facebook. Google translate is leaving a lot to be desired, but you can get the sense of it:

On 22.07.2016 GG. At 5:50 pm witnesses came to the police station and reported a shooting in the area of Hanau Street, which then shifted into Ries street and inside the Olympia mall.

Witnesses report three different people with guns.

The type and number of victims are currently unknown. The police [are using] all available forces with the support of special forces, the federal police and neighbouring präsidien.
At the moment no perpetrators have been arrested.

An APB out on them is running with high pressure. Due to the unclear situation we ask all people in the metropolitan area to stay at home or to seek shelter in nearby buildings. The operation of the public transport is currently set.

CNN published this video of people running from the scene:

CNN also has this interview with someone who was inside the mall and describes hearing 6-7 shots and then more as she was leaving by an emergency exit:

This BBC graphic shows the location of the attack:

It’s still early so some of this information may turn out to be wrong or incomplete. We’ll update this post as more information comes in.
