Trump laments lack of 'consequences' for protesters

During last night’s debate, Donald Trump was asked about people who are assaulted during his rallies, including Rakeem Jones who was elbowed in the face at a recent rally by an attendee. Trump’s answer to the question concluded, “I certainly do not condone that.” And yet, during a rally in St. Louis Friday Trump lamented the lack of consequences for protesters:

“You know, part of the problem and part of the reason it takes so long is nobody wants to hurt each other anymore, right? And they’re being politically correct the way they take them out so it takes a little bit longer. And honestly, protesters they realize it. They realize that there are no consequences to protesting anymore. There used to be consequences. There are none anymore. So that’s it…Are they gone, yeah, they’re gone. Our country has to toughen up folks, we have to toughen up.”

Video of the event posted to You Tube shows protesters interrupted Trump’s speech for roughly ten minutes. Trump repeatedly called for security to “get ’em out!” and also said the protesters were the people who were “destroying out country.” As the interruption dragged on Trump suggested the protests added to the “flavor” of the rally and asked the crowd, “isn’t this better than listening to a long boring speech?” As security finally began to remove some of the protesters the crowd, which seemed to be in an upbeat mood, sang “Nah, nah, nah, nah, hey, hey, goodbye.” That’s when Trump made his comments about consequences.

But the protests continued for several more minutes. Trump was mostly silent but told the crowd, “There has to be some decorum. There has to be some law and order in our country.” He continued, “The hatred in this country is incredible. The divisiveness is incredible and we’re going to end it.” Moments later Trump returned to the treatment of protesters:

“We lose our jobs, we lose our factories and then on top of it we have wackos like this going for ten minutes. It’s really terrible. It’s really terrible. And then if you’re a little bit rough, if you’re a little rough…you see the abuse the police were taking back there? I mean the police should be suing them it shouldn’t be the other way around. [cheers] And these people in the media, the most dishonest human beings on earth. They are the worst. They are the worst. So what they’ll do is they’ll take ten minutes worth of clips of that. And if one policeman accidentally moves a finger and touches this wise guy it’s like ‘oh, that’s the worst thing I’ve ever seen.’ And yet the police are being abused for ten minutes. Give me a break.”

When Trump was interrupted once more he said, “Get ’em out. What’s the same guy trying to come back, right? See that. In the old days they didn’t come back I can tell you that. They were gone.”
