Former Democratic presidential candidate Jim Webb won't vote for Hillary

Former Democratic presidential candidate Jim Webb says he will not be voting for front-runner Hillary Clinton but may consider crossing party lines to vote for Donald Trump.

Webb appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe Friday where he was asked if his criticism of Hillary Clinton during the early debates has left him with reservations about supporting her in the general election. “I’m not supporting anybody right now,” Webb replied with a smile. Asked directly, “Would you vote for Hillary Clinton?” Webb paused and then answered, “No, I would not vote for Hillary Clinton.” Webb went on to say that his reluctance to vote for Clinton was “nothing personal.”

Webb was then asked if he would vote for Trump. “I’m not sure yet. I don’t know who I’m going to vote for,” he replied. Webb then went on to praise Trump saying he was the only candidate with, “the courage to step forward and say we’ve got to clean out the stables of the American governmental system right now.”

Webb also did express some hesitation about voting for Trump saying, “you may get something very good or very bad” but he seemed to think that risk was preferable to the status quo that would result from voting for Hillary. This clip of the exchange was posted by the Washington Free Beacon:

Having a Democrat who shared the stage with Hillary a few weeks ago say he may bolt the party and vote for the other side’s front-runner is big news in any normal election year. But let’s face it, this can’t compete with the battle taking place inside the GOP Thunderdome. Webb’s personal decision not to vote for Hillary seems tepid compared to Mitt Romney’s sharper, more personal take-down of Trump earlier this week.

Still, Hillary Clinton remains a not-terribly-appealing candidate to a lot of people, including Democrats who continue to support Bernie Sanders and send him millions of dollars more than they are sending Hillary. Webb’s defection is just the latest evidence the other side’s front runner is having trouble too.
