This headline from the Daily Caller truly caught me by surprise this morning. Most people who read Hot Air and other conservative outlets or watch Fox News were already no doubt aware of the bombshell revelations from the infamous FBI FD-1023 form alleging that Joe Biden took a five million dollar bribe from a Burisma executive in Ukraine while he was the Vice President. But the story has gone virtually unmentioned anywhere else in the legacy media. (Based on their coverage, nothing happened anywhere else on the planet this week except for Donald Trump being indicted.) But somehow the information still seems to be seeping out and settling into the general American psyche. According to a new poll from the Trafalgar Group, a majority of Americans are not only aware of the allegations regarding Biden, but they believe that the Biden family did indeed receive cash payments from foreign nationals. Perhaps there is hope for the republic after all.
Over half of American voters believe that the Biden family has accepted payments from foreign nationals in order to influence politics in Washington D.C., according to a new poll from the Convention of States Action and the Trafalgar Group.
President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, is currently the subject of a House Oversight Committee investigation which is looking into his conduct and business transactions while overseas during his time on the board of the Ukrainian company Burisma. According to a new poll released Wednesday, 53.3% of respondents believed that the Biden family had accepted bribes from foreign officials, while 34% indicated that they believed in the family’s innocence.
Here’s the specific language of the poll question: “As a result of the ongoing Congressional investigation into Hunter Biden, do you believe the Biden family received payments from foreign nationals to influence policy in Washington, D.C.?”
The partisan party breakdown in the poll results was as stark as you might expect. Barely 11% of Democrats said they believed the Bidens had received such payments. But nearly all (89.8%) of Republicans believed it was true. But an even more surprising revelation might be hiding in the numbers for the Democrats. Only 23.5% of them answered that they were “not sure,” suggesting that they either didn’t know about the allegations or hadn’t heard enough to make up their minds. So the news does seem to be getting around somehow, despite the best efforts of the legacy media to suppress it.
The news for the Bidens wasn’t good among independent voters, either. They believed that the Bidens received such payments by a 50 to 29 margin, with 21% either being unsure or not answering. Calls for the full release of the documents to the public continue, but thus far the FBI is refusing to comply. The Bureau recently released an internal memo for its own people explaining why they need to refuse congressional oversight in the interest of protecting “confidential human sources.” We can’t say with any certainty, but it sounds like they might be facing some pushback within their own ranks.
The next question to tackle is how this situation might impact the 2024 elections, assuming it has any effect at all. Voters can rightly disagree on all manner of policy questions ranging from taxes and deficits to border control and crime. But how many people will be able to set aside a belief (or at least a strong suspicion) that the current President of the United States accepted millions of dollars in bribe money from a corrupt foreign actor and distributed it among his family? Shouldn’t that really be a deal-breaker for a lot of people, even if they are highly put off by the Bad Orange Man?
I’m probably being far too idealistic here. The country really does seem far too politically broken at this point to operate under such assumptions. As sad as it is to say, I’m guessing there are still a lot of liberals out there who would shrug their shoulders and decide that there’s no level of crime or corruption that they’re unwilling to tolerate if it means that Trump won’t return to office.
