Watch: Bill Clinton and Kathy Hochul laugh about crime on NY subways

The desperation of the Democrats heading into tomorrow’s midterm elections can be observed in the way that they are trotting out every big name in their party in an effort to get out the vote at the last minute. We’ve already seen Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton stumping for Democrats around the country, but now they’ve brought out The Big Dog. (Also described by his wife as “a hard dog to keep on the porch.”) Bill Clinton was in New York this weekend, stumping for unelected Governor Kathy Hochul, who should have had one of the easiest races of any Democrat, even in the midst of a potential red wave. Clinton took the stage and almost immediately seemed to inadvertently add to Hochul’s problems by attempting a joke that will likely not be amusing to most of the Empire State’s voters. He began mocking her opponent’s platform of dealing with crime and laughing about people suffering attacks in New York City’s subway system. The clip below is from the Twitter feed of Hochul’s opponent, Republican Congressman Lee Zeldin.

“Lee Zeldin. He makes it sound like Kathy Hochul gets up every morning, goes to the nearest subway stop, and hands out billy clubs and baseball bats to everybody who gets on the subway.”

Clinton then goes on to attempt an apparent imitation of Zeldin as a posturing “tough guy,” flexing his muscles. He laughs aloud and is joined by some members of the audience of liberals and Democrats.

Zeldin’s response got to the heart of the issue.

Yesterday, @BillClinton and @KathyHochul were laughing and joking about recent subway crimes. This tells you everything you need to know about how little they care about your life and safety. The countless victims of rampant crime do not think it’s funny. We all deserve better.

Just how out of touch are these people? We even have liberal cable media hosts on CNN and MSNBC tagging Hochul and bringing up the fact that New Yorkers are afraid to ride the subways because of all the attacks and robberies that go on. (Subway ridership is still well below pre-pandemic levels and there have been almost 400 assaults reported in the tunnels this year.) Do Hochul and Clinton really believe that anyone is laughing about that?

Of course, this goes back to the entire “out of touch” theme. Why would either Bill Clinton or Kathy Hochul know or care about what goes on in the subways? They travel in armored limousines with a phalanx of heavily armed guards keeping them safe. In the case of Clinton, police will frequently block off traffic when he travels to ensure that nothing impedes his progress.

But for all of the poor schlubs in New York who are forced to ride the subway, life isn’t quite so cushy or convenient. When people aren’t being robbed or raped, they are randomly pushed onto the tracks by deranged homeless people and drug addicts. (That happened just last week, by the way.)

Tomorrow is the day that Kathy Hochul will face her final accounting at the hands of the voters. One recent poll shows the race tied in an election that was never even supposed to be close. Victory for Lee Zeldin is still far from a sure bet in a state with a two-to-one Democratic registration advantage. But if he loses and the voters keep this chuckling elitist in office for four more years, they will have nobody to blame but themselves.
