MSNBC host to Hochul: New Yorkers just don't feel safe

If there’s one unwritten rule at MSNBC (and most of the shows on CNN for that matter), it’s that you don’t discuss awkward subjects that paint Democratic administrations in a bad light. But things seem to be going so poorly for the Democrats on the eve of the 2022 midterms that those old rules are falling by the wayside. Unelected New York Governor Kathy Hochul sat down this weekend for what should have been a friendly session of softball questions with the liberal network’s Stephanie Ruhle. After allowing Hochul some time to list all of her “accomplishments” and what she’s doing to make New York a safer place, Ruhle threw the playbook out the window and related her own experiences in the city and the fact that New Yorkers simply don’t feel safe. The horror spreading across Hochul’s face was truly something to see and she seemed at a loss for words in response to the broadside. (Fox News)

MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle pressed Gov. Kathy Hochul on crime and her plans to address it in New York City during an appearance on MSNBC on Friday, insisting New Yorkers don’t feel safe.

After Hochul touted getting guns off the streets in New York and her partnership with New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Ruhle interrupted and emphasized that people do not feel good about crime in New York.

“Okay, I’m gonna interrupt you then. Here’s the problem. We don’t feel safe. You might be working closely with Mayor Adams, you may have spent a whole lot of money. But I walked into my pharmacy, and everything is on lockdown because of shoplifters. I am not going into the subway. People do not feel safe in this town. So you may have done these things, but right now, we’re not feeling good. We’re worried we could be San Francisco,” Ruhle said.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is worth a million. So here’s the video clip of the interview from the RNC Research Twitter feed.

So we have an actual New York City resident sitting a few feet away from the Governor of New York and telling her that she’s “worried we could be San Francisco.” That’s not just an indictment of Hochul’s administration and policies in the state of New York. That’s a broadside aimed at the entire Democratic progressive platform across the country. She could have chosen Chicago, Baltimore, Los Angeles, or New Orleans. The result would have been the same.

Of course, in a refreshing change from the business as usual at MSNBC, Ruhle is absolutely correct. But I find myself wondering if this was just a New Yorker who is frightened and frustrated to the point of blurting out something on camera. Could it have been pre-planned? If so, that would mean that some calculations have been going on behind the scenes at her network.

By all accounts, the Democrats appear to be heading for a disaster at the polls tomorrow. Is MSNBC worried about looking entirely clueless if they continue singing the praises of liberal policies in the face of that sort of societal shift in attitudes? Taking this theory to the next level, are the analysts at MSNBC seeing numbers suggesting that Hochul might actually lose tomorrow? In that case, they won’t need to worry about any possible future enmity from her since she will have returned to the private sector.

No matter the outcome of any specific races tomorrow, it’s very likely that MSNBC will be broadcasting to a potential audience in a nation that looks significantly different on Wednesday morning. I will venture to say that the higher-ups at the network are thinking that they can’t continue to seek the attention of a dwindling number of people who are willing to pretend that crime isn’t out of control and the situation at the border is just fine and dandy.

Nobody is buying Joe Biden’s lies about how gas is less expensive than when he came into office and wind energy will stop people from freezing to death this winter. And their advertisers are probably increasingly aware of this as well. It’s just possible that MSNBC may be undergoing a “shift” of its own. Time will tell.
