Roseanne Barr cuts record in Nashville, says she's moving to Israel

After Roseanne Barr’s former costar gave us a pretty good indication of what the future holds for her character on the new spinoff show (spoiler alert: she doesn’t have a future in corporeal form), we were able to guess what direction the show was taking. But what about Roseanne herself? Is there room for a comeback after her allegedly racist Twitter rants or is she all washed up? Ms. Barr showed up on a podcast this week to bring everyone up to date on her plans and they’re probably not what you were expecting. First of all, she won’t be watching The Conners when it debuts. In fact, she’s going to go far away to avoid having to see or hear about the show at all. Her destination is Israel. But before leaving she’s supposedly taken time out to launch her music career and start writing a new sitcom. (Hollywood Reporter)

“I have an opportunity to go to Israel for a few months and study with my favorite teachers over there, and that’s where I’m going to go and probably move somewhere there and study with my favorite teachers,” the actress said in a new podcast with Rabbi Shmuley Boteach, the latest of many such appearances with the rabbi. “I have saved a few pennies and I’m so lucky I can go … and study with any rabbi that I can ask to teach me, and it’s my great joy and privilege to be a Jewish woman.”

Barr said she wishes no ill will on anyone still associated with the show.

I suppose this is just another example of how I’m completely out of touch with Hollywood, but I had no idea that Roseanne was Jewish. I suppose it makes sense, though. According to the Jerusalem Post, Barr has previously said that she wants to move to Israel and run for Prime Minister. No word yet from Bibi Netanyahu as to how he’s sizing up the competition.

What’s even more curious is Barr’s claim that she recently went to Nashville and “cut a record.” Her comments during the interview from the podcast are a bit confusing on this point and it’s hard to tell if this is a sign that she’d like to move into music professionally or if this was just a fun, personal lark. Unfortunately, my only experience with her singing ability was that ill-fated attempt at performing the National Anthem, but hopefully, that’s not a good measuring stick.

Her other professional update was the revelation that she’s been working on a new sitcom vehicle. Given the way she’s been able to generate cash for the networks in the past and her massive name recognition (both positive and negative), that’s hardly surprising. But the question I have is whether or not anyone would touch it at this point. Plenty of television executives would have to be tempted by the chance to sign her, but now that she’s had the scarlet letter “R” (for racist) sewn on her outfit, would any of them take the chance and sign her? A new show starring Roseanne Barr would draw huge ratings, at least initially, if only because of the number of people that would be curious to see what happened. That might tempt an outfit like TBS to take a chance, but I’m guessing the major networks won’t jump to get back in bed with her that quickly.

Roseanne just sounds a bit confused in these interviews. I find myself more worried about whether or not she’s okay right now than what her next acting gig is going to be.
