A kindergarten gun control walkout? C'mon, man...

The March for Our Lives school walkouts this week certainly garnered plenty of media attention. Of course, the students who favor strict gun control laws received far more media love than the ones who support the Second Amendment and hardening schools as potential targets, but that’s really just another day that ends in a “Y” for most of the media. One of the walkouts, however, missed out on the attention it might have merited. It took place at Harbor Elementary School in New London, Connecticut. If the phrase “elementary school” already caught your attention you’re on the right track. To make matters even more bizarre, the protesters were almost all five years old because it was a group of kindergartners. (NBC Connecticut)

Students across the nation walked out of school Wednesday in honor of the victims of the Parkland shooting last month, including a group of New London kindergarteners.

“We love school! We love school,” children in New London are chanting in a video posted on Facebook.

While people involved in the walkout involving a group of 5-year-olds at Harbor Elementary School said the demonstration was about school safety, student safety and parent permission have been called into question.

“It was discussed, it was a safety march and we took them out and they chanted ‘we love school’ and ‘honk your horn.’ And we told them that the 17 angels are above in heaven, they’re watching down and they’re proud,” one parent, Olga Vokolou, said.

As it turns out, the teachers who organized this event didn’t inform the parents aside from a post on Facebook and even the school administrators were left in the dark. To defend their actions and make this seem a bit less preposterous, they described it as a “safety drill.” Now, if that’s all that was going on it wouldn’t be a problem. There are already fire drills and similar emergency preparedness routines in schools and having the kids practice in case they need to evacuate because of an active shooter situation or any other threat is a sensible idea.

But that’s obviously not what was going on here. Check out this brief video from the local CBS outlet. You’ll see the toddlers not only chanting “we love school,” but standing by the side of the street and cheering as cars go by. Also, as reported by the school crossing guard, the teachers were holding up signs that read “Enough” and encouraging motorists to honk their horns.

The crossing guard, who apparently has more common sense than the school staff, is quoted as saying, “I thought it was pushing it with that age group. I don’t think they understood what was actually happening.”

Ya think? These are children of four, five or six years. Do you really think they understand the gun control issue, mental health or questions about armed guards? Do you see many kids that age putting down their toy blocks so they can debate the merits of extended capacity magazines? This was no “safety drill” by the school. It was a blatant case of activist teachers using those children as props for political purposes. An actual safety drill would have steered the children to the closest, safe, defensible position where law enforcement and medical assistance (if needed) could reach them. They wouldn’t be standing a few feet from traffic whizzing by in the event of an actual attack.

And yet the school administration and even most of the parents are too indoctrinated to speak out against this. The most they are saying is that they would have liked to have been informed in advance. These kids are probably in more danger from their own teachers right now than they are from a random act of physical violence.
