Finally: Duke offers men a safe space to consider their "toxic masculinity"

The special snowflakes have won another hard fought victory in their campaign to save society from itself. At Duke University there will finally be safe spaces assigned to a group not normally afforded such luxuries. These will be zones for men only, but they’re not designed to protect them from unpopular opinions about the male of the species. They’re more akin to time out rooms where all of you nasty Y-chromosome types can consider how terrible it is that you weren’t born female and the potential damage you do just by existing. Duke University is famous for its science and engineering programs, as well as its dominance in college basketball. Now, it may also become known as a great place for men to gather and contemplate why they’re such horrible people.

The Duke Men’s Project, launched this month and hosted by the campus Women’s Center, offers a nine-week program for “male-identified” students that discusses male privilege, patriarchy, “the language of dominance,” rape culture, pornography, machismo and other topics.

The student newspaper’s editorial board endorsed the new program yesterday, insisting it was “not a reeducation camp being administered by an oppressed group in the service of the feminization of American society.”

Really? Because it certainly does sound for all the world precisely like a reeducation camp being administered by an oppressed group in the service of the feminization of American society. I realize the student paper is saying this in a sarcastic tone, but I really couldn’t have come up with a better description myself.

We’re left to wonder if Duke was really the ideal spawning ground for this brave new world. Consider for a moment that one of the stated purposes of these new safe spaces is for men to reflect upon “rape culture.” Perhaps my memory is getting a bit faulty as the years go by, but isn’t this the same Duke University which was the site of the now infamous lacrosse team “rape culture” debacle? And “pornography or machismo” at a college campus? Who knew these sorts of things were going on? Next you’ll be telling me that young men are doing keg stands and giving each other stupid nicknames.

But hey… don’t let that stop you. If you want to set up safe spaces for everyone else, you may as well have one for the boys too. Just be sure to put in a big screen television and one of those Jagermeister tap machines. Sure, they cost $300 bucks, but they’ll last for a generation with proper maintenance.
