Maryland high school moves to genderless homecoming court

In yet another sign of Social Justice Warriors poisoning the well of education, one high school in Maryland has decided to move into the bold new frontier of discarding gender and basic science during their homecoming festivities this year. Rather than electing a homecoming king and queen, they’ll just toss accepted gender roles out the window and pick two students who are free to be whatever they like. I picked up this story from Aleister at Legal Insurrection and was immediately left with the obvious question… what could possibly go wrong? (Washington Post)

Breaking with the tradition at many of the nation’s schools, students at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School will adopt a gender-neutral homecoming court this year, moving away from the longtime practice of electing a boy as “king” and a girl as “queen.”

Students in each grade will vote for two classmates from a ballot of finalists, with the top vote-getters crowned at the school’s homecoming football game. It’s a change that means those honored at halftime on Oct. 7 could include two boys, two girls, transgender students or a boy-girl duo.

After I finish telling you to all get off my lawn, allow me to frame this story as yet another example of How the Internet Ruins Everything. What we’re seeing here is a small slice of society in the form of a high school student government which has been swept up in a hotly debated topic on social media and moving to adopt it with little structural guidance from parents and school administrators. The wholesale abandonment of traditional gender roles is not just some fun experiment that will garner your school a few headlines in the local paper. It’s a dangerous construct which weakens the ties which bind us together as a species and leaves children ill prepared for adult life.

We can tackle the question from hard medical science or societal norms and it comes up as a failure either way. Our species evolved with two distinct genders, sharing much in common but with each also having wonderful, unique qualities which make us what we are. Abandoning those roles and norms isn’t some sort of advancement in social enlightenment, but a risky experiment which confuses young minds and blurs lines which we rely on for the continuity of civilization.

It would be helpful if some of these kids could receive some much needed guidance from responsible adults. Men and women are different, no matter how much some may wish to deny it. And that’s not a bad thing. In fact it’s what makes the world go round.
