The New York Times provides some calm, collected and generally harmless sounding coverage of a list of demands issued by members of the Black Lives Matter movement this week. Being that we’re finally into the heat of the general election season, this doesn’t come as any surprise. And if you only read the Gray Lady’s description of what they’re asking for it sounds downright reasonable.

More than 60 organizations associated with the Black Lives Matter movement have released a series of demands on Monday, including for reparations.

The list of six platform demands is aimed at furthering their goals as the presidential campaign heads into the homestretch…

As part of the effort, the groups are demanding, among other things, reparations for what they say are past and continuing harms to African-Americans, an end to the death penalty, legislation to acknowledge the effects of slavery, as well as investments in education initiatives, mental health services and jobs programs.

If all you were to read was that last paragraph from The Times you might think that this is a workable starting point for a discussion. The death penalty is always a subject open for debate. Some sort of congressional resolution “acknowledging” the effects of slavery has certainly been brought up before. “Investments in education initiatives” is a very pleasant sounding topic which is common in Democratic platforms. And who could argue with mental health services and “jobs programs” in today’s economic climate?

But what’s really inside of this package once you get past the spin that the paper puts on it? The tricky one right up front is always the subject of “reparations.” Whenever such a proposal comes up the immediate questions which arise are how much and who would get the money? Not to worry. BLM has cleared all that up for you. Take a look at the reparations page from the platform. Here’s what you’ll find.

[F]ull and free access for all Black people (including undocumented and currently and formerly incarcerated people) to lifetime education…

[A] guaranteed minimum livable income for all Black people…

[C]orporate and government reparations

[M]andated public school curriculums

The Democrats have been talking about some “free” college education for everyone, but this is lifetime education on the public dime. And it’s only for “Black people.” Socialists nations have discussed a government provided assured minimum income – though it never goes very far – but BLM would like it done here. Again… only for “all Black people.” These would be the same recipients as the payments to come in the form of “corporate and government reparations” one assumes. So first of all, as for all of you Hispanic, Asian and Native American citizens… go pound sand. You’re on your own.

I would also love to hear a little more about precisely who qualifies? Do we use the “One-Drop rule” standard? If my great great grandmother was black, do I qualify? How about Rachel Dolezal?

Under the “End the War on Black People” section you’ll see that we’re in line to remove all police from schools, end the cash bail system for suspects who are arrested and the immediate termination of all deportations of illegal aliens. Oh, and under number 7 on that page you’ll see that BLM wants an end to the use of body cameras by police. Gee… I wonder where that one came from? And wait until you see what they want to do to the police.

There are plenty more goodies in the six platform sections at the link but I’ll leave you to discover them for yourself. But while you do, think back to the way the New York Times described this list of demands and see how well it matches up with the reality.
