Those "lock her up" chants in Philadelphia were coming from liberals

Since arriving in Philadelphia for the convention I’ve been greeted by all sorts of unusual sights, sounds and, yes… smells. Aside from the cheesesteaks and the dizzying array of offerings in the market squares, there’s been plenty of politicking and plenty of protests. While walking near 11th and Market yesterday I ran right into the jaws of a Black Lives Matter march chanting about “no more racist police” just as I was passing a group of the aforementioned officers who were out there making sure the demonstrators remained safe. A larger crowd was gathered not far from the federal building and they were obviously composed of supporters of Bernie Sanders voters. They were angry without a doubt, possibly even more riled up than they were during the heat of the primary race. There were “Hillary For Jail” t-shirts on display and a variety of chants which were none too flattering to the presumptive Democratic nominee. The Wall Street Journal took notice of the same phenomenon.

It’s not just Republicans that want presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in prison.

At a lively Sunday march in support of former Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, chants of “lock her up,” “Hillary for Prison” signs and t-shirts and calls for indictment were common among the most ardent supporters of Mr. Sanders, who arrived in Philadelphia to make their voices heard to the delegates attending the Democratic National Convention…

But at the pro-Sanders rally, attendees were more than eager to list the reasons that Mrs. Clinton deserved to be incarcerated. At least once during a four-mile march from City Hall to Roosevelt Park, rallygoers began loudly changing “Lock her up!” — the same chant heard on the floor of the RNC.

Last night I was watching the 60 Minutes interview done with Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine in which she claimed that she hadn’t seen any of the leaked emails and really wasn’t following the story. (The idea that the campaign isn’t watching that story with a microscope to ward off any potential damage to the candidate is beyond laughable, but apparently the press is going to let her get away with that whopper.) One of the questions which did make the cut, however, was an inquiry as to her opinion of the chants of “Lock her up” at the GOP convention. Clinton did her best to put on a sad face and express confusion over why they hated her so much, after once again dishonestly claiming that the FBI had cleared her of any wrongdoing. It was a perfect opportunity for her to spin the situation against the Republicans and show how biased and unfair they all are.

Will anyone ask Secretary Clinton about the voters from her own party wearing the same shirts and chanting the same phrases in the streets of Philadelphia? These are liberals and they are quite upset. They not only feel deprived of a fair primary shot for Bernie Sanders, but are clearly tuned in to the embarrassing, ongoing episodes of corruption and dishonesty which have characterized their party throughout this entire election cycle. If the Democrats are expecting a joyous, unified celebration of positive support at the convention this week they should probably fasten their seat belts. Judging by the folks I saw in the streets yesterday, Philadelphia could make Cleveland look like a garden party.
