I’ve been watching the unfolding national response to the terror attack in Orlando with a growing sense of dismay as the days go by. It frequently seems as if the discussion taking place in the media and among primarily liberal politicians is focusing on everything except what actually happened on Sunday morning. Perhaps it’s just too terrible to think about, but there’s also a mounting body of evidence that the old rule of never letting a perfectly good tragedy go to waste is in play. On at least once college campus we’re seeing what may be an example of this phenomenon mimicking a Monty Python sketch.
At the University of Missouri, a group of students staged a vigil in memory of the victims, standing in solidarity with the gay and lesbian civilians who were murdered by the now infamous ISIS supporter. Their planned memorial hit a sour note, however, when another student showed up to decry the service because it wasn’t focused on the correct demographic group. (The College Fix)
A vigil Monday planned by several University of Missouri student organizations was supposed to honor victims of Sunday morning’s deadly shooting rampage in a popular gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla.
It turned into a blame session against Mizzou’s LGBTQ community for not being intersectional enough.
Latino activists, including a Mizzou official, scolded the mostly white gathering for ignoring racial issues. That led one attendee to fume on Facebook that the organizers had invented a “race issue” out of a “homophobic attack” by gunman Omar Mateen.
I’ll include the video from The College Fix below, but this is simply a classic example of leftist sub-groups carping with each other over who can claim the greatest share of victim mentality. The display by Ms. Tiffany Melecio (the Latino, bi-sexual, BLM activist in question) is something to behold. She scolds the group of mourners, telling them how she wishes that this many white people had shown up for their Black Lives Matter rallies, moving on from there to her personal tale of having to come out as bi-sexual to her Spanish-speaking Guatemalan mother. It went on for a while longer but by that point I’d totally lost the thread.
This comes back to the sense of dread I referenced above in terms of the nation’s response to the events in Orlando. People are seizing on this as a moment to restrict gun rights. They’re making it about discrimination against gays and lesbians. And since it was a largely Latino crowd we might as well toss in some racial justice while we’re at it, eh?
People… we were attacked by ISIS only a stone’s throw from Disneyland. Do you suppose that there’s any room left in our collective consciousness to realize that we are at war and facing an enemy whose brutality and utter lack of any semblance of humanity knows no bounds? We’re turning the worst radical Islamist terror attack on our home soil since 9-11 into a social justice debate. This is a 21st century version of Nero fiddling while Rome goes up in flames.
Still, there may be some humor to be found in an otherwise dismal discussion in this video, so help yourself.
