Never let it be said that the good people of San Francisco are inconsistent. They are clearly steadfast in their beliefs, no matter how much they may fly in the face of reality or common decency, and having decided upon a course of action, they stick with it, by golly. While the rest of the nation struggles with the problem of illegal immigrants enjoying the benefits of the Obama catch and release program even after they have committed multiple felonies up to and including murder, the City by the Bay has voted to once again formalize their status as a “sanctuary city” where illegals can live without the fear of being turned over to immigration control. Ten months after a 32-year-old woman was shot dead on a pier in San Francisco, allegedly by a man living illegally in the U.S., local lawmakers and the sheriff came to an agreement Tuesday to reaffirm the city’s standing as a so-called sanctuary city.

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted unanimously, with the support of Sheriff Vicki Hennessy, to restrict local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration officials. Hennessy had previously threatened to set her own rules without the board’s approval, reported the San Francisco Chronicle.

“Last year was a really challenging moment for our sanctuary city policy,” Supervisor John Avalos, who led the negotiations and is an advocate for immigrants’ rights, said. “But here, today, we have an update to our policy that we get to vote on to ensure that as a city we can unite all together on what the standard is going to be.”

Rather than once again going into the endless laundry list of real world examples of how these policies put everyone at risk, let’s just turn back to the results of last month’s hearings by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee under Jason Chaffetz where they spoke with the Department of Homeland Security about illegal immigrant felons. Here are the key takeaways.

• The discretionary release of dangerous criminals by ICE places local communities at risk.
• The Administration’s policies have led to the release of 86,288 criminal aliens who committed 231,074 crimes since 2013.
• President Obama’s executive actions on immigration – announced in November 2014 – increase risk to public safety. Arrests, detainers issued, and removals at ICE are down almost 40 percent.
• Failure to remove criminal aliens is not due to lack of resources. In July 2015, DHS leadership reprogrammed $113M from detention and removal operations to other DHS components. The Administration is requesting less money and fewer beds for ICE enforcement and removal operations.
• DHS should work with the State Department to formally discontinue issuing visas to countries that refuse to repatriate their nationals who have been ordered removed. Chairman Chaffetz requested documentation of correspondence between DHS and State regarding notification of non-cooperation.

This should convince us all of the need for new management not just in San Francisco or the state of California, but in the White House. Congress should cut off any and all funding which goes to San Francisco either directly or indirectly until such time as they can find a way to live up to their fundamental responsibility to ensure the safety of their citizens to the best of their ability. Wasting tax dollars on a self-avowed haven for known, dangerous criminals is an insult to the nation.
