Since I clearly have no political prognostication skills, I’ll be spending the rest of the day researching fabulous chili recipes to share with you all this weekend. I might as well, since I honestly never thought that Bernie Sanders would pull into the lead over Hillary Clinton nationally, as opposed to in some individual states where he spent a lot of time and money. But as of last night, that’s exactly what’s happened. (Daily Caller)

Bernie Sanders has overtaken Hillary Clinton in the latest Fox News national presidential poll.

Among Democratic voters, 47 percent named Sanders as their first choice for president, a 10 point jump from Fox News’ January poll.

On the other hand, Clinton’s support fell 5 points from 49 percent to 44 percent, and she lost ground to Sanders among some of her core demographics, including women (-25), whites (-13) and “regular democrats” (-14).

What’s going on here? Too many years of following the political circus around the country have cured me of ever getting my hopes up, but it’s almost looking as if the wheels are coming off the Clinton campaign. While the Fox poll might turn out to be an outlier, this pattern is starting to trickle down to the state level. One poll has Bernie leading Clinton in Colorado now, where she held a 28 point edge last month. And we already saw that her similarly massive lead in Nevada has essentially boiled away to nothing. What explains all of this?

Perhaps it has something to do with her lack of… for lack of a better word I’m going to say, honesty? She doesn’t seem clear on the question herself.

Pelley began by asking Clinton, “You know in ’76, Jimmy Carter famously said, ‘I will not lie to you.’”

“Well, I will tell you, I have tried in every way I know how, literally from my years as a young lawyer, all the way through my time as Secretary of State to level with the American people,” Clinton claimed.

Pelley replied, “You talk about leveling with the American people. Have you always told the truth?”

“I’ve have always tried to, always, always,” Clinton suggested.

These sound more like the ramblings of a suspect in an interrogation room with their hands cuffed to the table than a presidential candidate. How on Earth is the question, are you going to lie to us a tough one? Even if you’re talking out the side of your mouth, the answer is no. There’s some panic setting in at Clinton HQ as much as her many surrogates insist that they always knew it was going to be a long, hard slog.

Team Clinton has been counting on her lead over Sanders with minority voters to carry the day, but I have to wonder if we aren’t seeing yet another parallel between Bernie’s campaign and that of Donald Trump. It’s true that the Democrats rely heavily on the minority vote, but what if Sanders – much like the GOP frontrunner – is turning out a significantly larger white vote than we’ve come to expect in recent cycles? We’re going to want to watch the demographic breakdown of the results in both South Carolina and Nevada closely when both parties finish up. There’s something in the air, and it doesn’t look great for the establishment on either side of the aisle.
