Six Bosnian immigrants charged for sending money, equipment to ISIS

This will probably wind up being characterized as a case of law enforcement unfairly targeting immigrant communities. But even if that’s the case, it’s a good thing that the feds were keeping an eye on this particular group of Bosnians.

Six Bosnian immigrants have been accused of sending money and military equipment to terrorist fighters overseas, including the Islamic State group and al-Qaida in Iraq.

An indictment unsealed Friday in U.S. District Court in St. Louis said the defendants donated money themselves and in some cases collected funds from others in the U.S. and sent the donations overseas. It says two of the defendants used some of the money to buy U.S. military uniforms, firearms accessories, tactical gear and other equipment, which was shipped to people in Turkey and Saudi Arabia who forwarded the supplies to terrorists…

The indictment names Ramiz Zijad Hodzic, 40, his wife, Sedina Unkic Hodzic, 35, and Armin Harcevic, 37, all of St. Louis County; Nihad Rosic, 26 of Utica, New York; Mediha Medy Salkicevic, 34, of Schiller Park, Illinois; and Jasminka Ramic, 42 of Rockford, Illinois.

All face charges of conspiring to provide material support and resources to terrorists and with providing material support to terrorists. Rosic and Ramiz Hodzic are also charged with conspiring to kill and maim people in a foreign country.

One of the first things that comes to mind when I see stories such as this is to wonder how people are getting away with mailing all of this material to the troubled spots of the world. Some years back I had to look into the rules about trying to mail some beer that we brewed to a friend in London and it seemed like it would be easier to get a concealed carry permit in Chicago. These must be some fairly clever individuals… either that or the system is suffering under far greater security problems than anyone wants to admit.

Half of the group under arrest are from St. Louis County, which has already seen more than its fair share of problems lately. Possibly more shocking is that one of them – Nihad Rosic – was living barely a dozen miles from where I grew up in upstate New York. Incidentally, Rosic was additionally noted as having tried to board a flight from New York to Syria to join the fight. Just lovely. And the area where he was living isn’t known for being any sort of hotbed of unrest… it’s just another small to medium sized urban area with the same economic problems seen all across the country.

The description of the three from St. Louis County was equally disturbing. The property manager of the apartments where the Hodzics were living described them as just being friendly and saying that the wife was very sweet. So any of these communities around the country can apparently hold pockets of seemingly nice, friendly immigrants who are working away in their spare time to lend aid and comfort to the enemy. But if you point that out you’re a xenophobe, so mind your privilege, kids.
