Charlie Manson and Star: A love story

I know what you’re thinking… a Charles Manson story? I agree that Manson has been on the shelf for far too long to be of interest. He really can’t do or even say anything shocking anymore which is worthy of note. But something crossed the desk this week which caught my attention relating to the long confined madman. Charlie has another great love in his life (at least in her mind, anyway) and she’s a 25 year old fan of his who he named Star. And in Star’s mind – or what remains of it – the two of them will soon be man and wife.

Serial killer Charles Manson is to marry his 25-year-old girlfriend behind bars, she has claimed.

In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, the young woman who calls herself “Star,” tells the world that she is to be the next bride of the 79-year-old.
“I’ll tell you straight up, Charlie and I are going to get married,” she told Rolling Stone magazine. “When that will be, we don’t know. But I take it very seriously. Charlie is my husband. Charlie told me to tell you this. We haven’t told anybody about that.

This apparently came as news to Charlie.

Manson, who has been married twice before, denied the claim of marriage.

“That’s a bunch of garbage. You know that, man. That’s trash. We’re just playing that for public consumption,” he told Rolling Stone. He also revealed that he was bisexual.

Manson said: “Sex to me is like going to the toilet. Whether it’s a girl or not, it doesn’t matter.”

Again, I don’t find Manson himself all that newsworthy anymore, but in this case it’s his young devotee who makes the story. Her “reasoning” (for lack of a better word) for falling head over heels for Charlie is only the beginning of this case study in lost children. She loves him, you see, because Manson is all about the planet… the air, the trees, the flowing streams. You know… nature, baby.

Star told the magazine she became enchanted with Manson’s environmental stance, which he calls ATWA — air, trees, water, air — when she was only 19…

“People can think I’m crazy,” she said. “But they don’t know. This is what’s right for me. This is what I was born for.”

Those short quotes simply don’t do enough to paint the full picture of Star, though. She could be just any lost, confused, kid if that’s all you have to go by. To get the full impact of why this story rose up high enough in the stack to merit a mention here, we need to go to the video.

I was chatting with Ed about this story earlier this weekend, and the only way we could come up with to describe her was to say that, if she is sane – and that’s a huge “if” – she sounds like some sort of escaped refugee from a cloistered, liberal commune who has had virtually no exposure to the outside world. And then somebody told her about Manson and she decided to break out and strike up a pen pal relationship with him. She’s frightening and yet fascinating to watch. What could have possibly happened to this child which led her to wind up in this dark place?

Oh, and in closing, even the image of her in the video (which is apparently a bit dated) won’t convey the full imagery without a more recent picture, so here you go. And… you’re welcome.
