So... how's that NATO summit going?

Those darned Tea Party hoodlums are at it again. After all, who else would run around protesting Obama and Rahm Emanuel? Oh… these guys.

Three men — Brian Church, 22, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Jared Chase, 27, of Keene, N.H.; and Brent Vincent Betterly, 24 of Oakland Park, Fla. — allegedly plotted to firebomb President Barack Obama’s campaign headquarters and Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s North Side home, as well as police stations and squad cars.

Undercover Chicago Police officers who infiltrated the group were with the suspects when they allegedly made Molotov cocktails — bottles filled with flammable liquid that are used as firebombs, sources said.

They were just a few of the thousands of people streaming into the Windy City to protest at the NATO summit taking place there now. And apparently these hoards of vocal citizens expressing their opinions were getting a warm welcome from… (emphasis mine)

When Billy Vassilakis and his girlfriend moved into their new place — a $600-a-month two-bedroom with carpeted floors and a linoleum-tiled kitchen in Bridgeport — they didn’t bother getting much furniture. They needed big empty rooms for visitors. Strangers were coming from across the country, a dozen at a time, to protest at the NATO Summit.

Vassilakis, a community activist who grew up in suburban Naperville, put his phone number on an Occupy Chicago housing board and met personally with any takers before deciding if they were welcome.

Of course the protesters are incensed over their treatment by police. Take, for example, the case of the guys who were busted for making Molotov Cocktails. It was obviously all a big misunderstanding, because they just had some home beer brewing equipment, right?

For the record, I’ve been a practitioner of home brewing of beer and mead since the Clinton administration. If your recipes involve gasoline and oily rags, I think I’ll pass on stopping by your place for a cold one.

In any event, there are more meetings, protests and mayhem on tap for today. Stay tuned. We’ll be lucky if Chicago gets out of this without any serious destruction or loss of life.
