A brief break from the political news for something a bit more, well… awful and terrifying. A young Australian woman on holiday in Africa decided to get all extreme and go bungee jumping from the Victoria Falls Bridge. (As the pictures and video will demonstrate, we’re talking a drop of more than 300 feet.) As you might guess from the fact that you’re reading about it here, things didn’t quite go off as planned.
A 22-year-old woman from Australia fell 111 metres into a river during a failed bungee jump in Zimbabwe on New Year’s Eve, but she survived to tell her death-defying experience.
The bungee cord snapped as Erin Langworthy of Applecross, Western Australia was at the end of her jump from the Victoria Falls bridge on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia. She survived the impact from the fall and overcame two more life-and-death situations: being dragged downstream towards rapids while her feet remained tied and being eaten alive by hungry crocodiles in the African river.
We’ll provide the video for you below, but as the woman describes, the moment the bungee cord snapped wound up only being the beginning of her problems. She got caught underwater when the cord became tangled in some rocks, leading to her nearly drowning. Then, after finally making it to shore, her inept, would be rescuers laid her on her back rather than her side, preventing her from getting the water out of her lungs, very nearly killing her yet again.
As background, I’ve done a bit of this myself, as well as quite a few skydives, and these games absolutely aren’t for the timid. (Or the smart, according to my family members.) But the highest bungee jump I made was less than 200 feet and I never had this happen to me.
I also have to provide you with fair warning here: The video isn’t just dramatic… it contains a bit of language from her friends on the bridge which you might expect to hear uttered when you see your sister’s bungee cord snap, and a few of the images of the damage to her back are rather graphic. So use your own judgement before clicking.
After I started this, I noticed that Howard has more on this story in the Green Room.
