Donny Deutsch: Sarah Palin is Snookie or Something

Before anyone blames me for bringing this up, it was Ed Morrissey who opened up the floodgates of Donny Deutsch media gold over the regular Morning Joe guest’s insightful analysis of Arizona law as it relates to Martin Luther King Day. Well, today he was back on the air in fine form, returning to a subject where he is clearly much more of an expert… Sarah Palin. Video and a brief transcription follow. It begins at roughly the one minute mark if you think you can take it.)

“Why the fascination (with Sarah Palin)? It’s very simple and I’m not going to be glib here. She is Snooki. It’s the same math. A younger generation they want to watch this character with big character with big hair who’s funny…you don’t know she’s going to say. It’s no different but for a higher demographic! We watch her she’s interesting looking..whats she going to say? She’s campy, she’s kitschy, it’s telegenic, its television, its entertaining that’s the fascination. Beginning, middle and end of story, she’s Snooki.”

It’s no secret to regular Hot Air readers that you’re not hearing this from one of the head cheerleaders from the Palin camp, but even I find this a bit offensive. Snooki? Really? Personally, I think Snooki should be offended when people call her Snooki. But that’s not the purpose of this article.

The raw irony in this clip is not what Deutsch said, but what came before. Today’s show opened with Joe and Mika posing the question, why does everyone keep talking about Sarah Palin? They then proceeded to play the Fox clip no less than five times over the next three hours, bringing Deutsch in for yet another turn on the dance floor to offer up his expert analysis of both Sarah Palin, popular culture and, presumably, the cast of Jersey Shore. Given Deutsch’s frequent performances of working out and toning his abs on previous shows, perhaps he’s hoping to replace “the Situation” on the show. Well done!
