Portman began calling allies Monday to let them know he didn’t plan to run nationally, sources familiar with the calls told POLITICO.

In a statement released Tuesday, Portman said he didn’t think he could run for president in 2016 while also serving effectively in the Senate.

“With the new Republican majority, I see a real opportunity over the next two years to break the gridlock in Washington and actually get things done to help Ohioans and all Americans,” he stated. “That’s where I believe I can play the most constructive role.”
