A major decrease in veteran homelessness rates is predicted this year, including one that may be historic.
On Monday, the nonprofit Community Solutions released a preliminary analysis of available 2026 point-in-time (PIT) count data on veteran homelessness. It works with more than 170 communities to secure housing and make homelessness rare and brief.
It comes before the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is expected to release its annual report this January, in which community data figures conduct PIT counts to estimate the national numbers of people experiencing homelessness in shelters and in unsheltered locations on a single night.
Findings by Community Solutions project an 8.2% veteran homelessness decline when compared to 2025. Numbers are also expected to fall below 30,000 in 2026, marking the first time ever since veterans were included in the Point-in-Time count beginning in 2009 (there was no figure in 2021 due to the COVID pandemic).
