June Lockhart was known as a beloved mother figure on classic TV shows such as Lassie and Lost in Space, but in real life, she was a rock and roll goddess—at least according to her TV son, Billy Mumy.
In a 2013 interview with the Television Academy Foundation, Mumy said of Lockhart, “She is truly a rock and roll goddess. I swear to God she lives for rock and roll.”
Lockhart, 100, died of natural causes on Oct. 23 at her Santa Monica, California, home, her spokesperson Harlon Ball confirmed to The New York Times. But she left behind a legacy that went way beyond Lassie, where she played foster mother Ruth Martin, or Lost in Space, where she played biochemist mom, Dr. Maureen Robinson.
In a 1994 interview, Lockhart said, “I can control my reputation, but not my image, because my image is how you see me.”
“I love rock ‘n’ roll and going to the concerts,” she added, according to CNN. “I have driven Army tanks and flown in hot air balloons. And I go plane-gliding – the ones with no motors. I do a lot of things that don’t go with my image.”
