London Tube Workers Go On Strike - Want a 32 Hour Week

London Underground services are continuing to face disruption on Monday, after workers walked out on Sunday in rolling action over pay and conditions.

Members of the Rail, Maritime And Transport union (RMT) are staging the walkout until Thursday.

There is little or no service on all of the Tube as different parts of RMT membership walk out on different days.

The Elizabeth line and the Overground are operating but will be much busier than usual.

Their demands aren't finding much sympathy with the folks now facing 3 1/2 hours one-way commutes five days a week thanks to the strike.

...The strike is about pay but also conditions. The RMT union has concerns about "fatigue management" - that is the stress that early and late shifts are having on the health of its members.

It has asked for a 32-hour week.

RMT general secretary Eddie Dempsey said: "Our members are doing a fantastic job to keep our capital moving and work strenuous shift patterns to make sure Londoners get to their destinations around the clock.

"They are not after a king's ransom, but fatigue and extreme shift rotations are serious issues impacting on our members health and wellbeing- all of which have not been adequately addressed for years by London Underground management.

Not much sympathy at all.

...“I don’t really agree with striking," she adds. "I would never ever strike for my patients but sometimes that’s the only way to get what you need.”

When told the reason for the strike is the RMT's demands to work a 32-hour working week, she says: “Is that all?

"That’s not much is it. We’d all love that wouldn’t we? I think it’s a little bit unrealistic. The country is in such a mess and we all need to pull together and not go on strike."
