The grieving never ends for Gold Star Families. The last three anniversaries, while the soulless wreck of many planted himself in the Oval Office, have been relentlessly awful. This year, the families of those killed at Abbey Gate, got some of what they needed. President Donald Trump invited them to the White House and signed a proclamation in honor of the Nation’s treasure. Minor in the scheme of things but long overdue.
Everything about the Afghanistan Withdrawal, the timing, the location of the base chosen, the State Department’s part, everything was a disaster. Botched doesn’t cut it. The Supplemental Department of Defense Review “Kabul Airport Attack Review Reaffirms Initial Findings, Identifies Attacker” absolved everyone of accountability and issued no new findings. So typical of our sclerotic Deep State. From that DOD report:
A supplemental review of the original investigation into the 2021 suicide bombing attack that killed 13 U.S. service members and roughly 170 Afghan civilians at Hamid Karzai International Airport’s Abbey Gate has reaffirmed the military’s findings of the initial investigation and identifies the attacker.
The report ends:
The official closed out the briefing by pointing out that the supplemental review team has photos of the 13 U.S. service members who lost their lives in the Abbey Gate attack posted in the team’s office in such a manner that the photos are the first thing the team members see in the morning, and the last thing they see as they depart for the evening.
“This is to always remind us of the fallen service members and the importance of what we’re doing,” the official said.
“This is to honor them.”
Cold comfort. In addition to the 13 killed, 45 personnel were wounded. Fifteen were wounded severely enough to require treatment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
