San Jose police said Monday they arrested a person suspected of keying a white Tesla vehicle in a Costco parking lot, prompting a response from the city’s mayor who questioned the motivations behind the vandalism incident.
A video, apparently recorded by the Tesla itself, ricocheted across the internet showing a person wearing a “USA” jacket exiting their own car in the parking lot before scratching a key across the Tesla’s passenger-side door. Multiple media outlets said the incident occurred on Friday.
San Jose Police Chief Paul Joseph said in a statement Monday night that a person had been arrested. The person was not immediately identified.
“This senseless crime and its subsequent consequences should serve as a clear reminder: no matter one’s personal beliefs or frustrations, they do not justify illegal actions. I urge everyone to respect one another and, above all, to respect the law,” Joseph said.
