Mobile Mardi Gras: Joe Cain's Merry Widows Weep for the 51st Year

It’s the one time of year when women want to be a widow.

Joe Cain’s Merry Widows bring wailing and whooping good times to a Mobile landmark.

With music and mourning, the Joe Cain Merry Widows wail as they walk through the Church Street Cemetery. They stop to praise the man who, legends say, brought the party back to Mobile.

“Joe Cain is special to Mobile; it’s like New Orleans doesn’t have it. And this is how we need to celebrate the fact that we started it,” Anna Adams said.

This year is a relatively late Mardi Gras, and on Sunday, particularly great weather makes for a big crowd at this unique event.

“Coming out here to the widows is a great day to celebrate our history and Mardi Gras,” Stephanie Evans said.

Joe Cain is the legendary character who restarted Mardi Gras after Reconstruction. The Confederate veteran dressed up as a Chickasaw chief, got some friends to follow him in a wagon, and had himself a parade.

Since 1974, The Krewe of Merry Widows - all claiming to be the wife 'Joe loved best' - have a procession to the graveyard where Joe Cain is buried on the Sunday before Mardi Gras. They wail and mourn at his grave and blame the other wives for killing him.

And then the parade starts.

It's a complete hoot. This year, they think there were about 200K people downtown for the Joe Cain Day parade. There are seven krewe parades scheduled today.

After all, Mobile is the 'Birthplace of Mardi Gras,' holding the first celebrations in the country in 1703.

Mobile is the birthplace of America's original Mardi Gras.

That's right, Mardi Gras originated in 1703 right here in our port city. It was revived after the Civil War when citizen Joe Cain, fed up with post-war misery, led an impromptu parade down city streets. We've been doing it ever since and we mark the annual occasion with majestic parades, colorful floats and flying MoonPies. Celebrate from February 14th to March 4th, 2025!
