And now by party affiliation shows the clear east-west divide.

AfD has managed to pull 21.8% of the vote, while the CDU slumped to 28%. They will still do everything they can to ice the AfD out of government completely by forming a coalition with whatever party will sleep with them to do so.

So it looks as though, unless a major breakthrough happens, with the wonders of the parliamentary system, AfD will be frozen out again if Merz can swing a coalition with one of the other parties.

...The CDU/CSU makes marginal gains to become the largest party thanks to the demise of the governing SPD and Greens. Their previous coalition partner FDP at 4.9% and the left nationalist BSW at 4.7% could fall short of the 5% threshold for representation and end up with zero seats.

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) with a huge increase in seats after securing its best-ever result in a national election.

The Left also sees its representation increase substantially.

It could mean that a CDU/SPD "grand coalition" could be formed to exclude the AfD.
