New Yorkers will soon be able to cross the street wherever they please when a recently-passed law takes effect in 2025.
With a veto-proof passage in the City Council, Mayor Eric Adams returned the legislation unsigned Oct. 28 making it Local Law 98 of 2024.
Councilwoman Mercedes Narcisse (D-Brooklyn) introduced the bill and characterized it as a way to limit police stops for jaywalking, a prevalent practice across the five boroughs. She said the overwhelming majority of those stops are of Black and Latino people
"Jaywalking happens everywhere in the neighborhoods across New York City,” she said. “This is crucial for ensuring that everyone understands how to use the street safely and responsibly, because we want people to be safe.”
