‘Crazy Woke’ Amazon and Target Under Pressure to Drop DEI Measures After Walmart Move

Target and Amazon will be put under pressure to drop their Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) policies after Walmart said it would institute a crackdown on woke measures.

Robby Starbuck, the conservative activist who pushed the retail giant into its U-turn, said in a video that “we have our eyes on Amazon and Target” because they are “acting crazy out there with wokeness”.

Walmart, the biggest private employer in the US, will phase out terms like “diversity, equity and inclusion” in company materials and end sales of items such as chest binders for children who express a trans identity, The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

Mr Starbuck said he had had“productive conversations” with Walmart executives about the decisions after he warned the retailer that he was “doing a story on wokeness there”.

Target might be a tussle for Robby. Woke is baked into their corporate DNA - hard-core progressives from the bottom up - and they've been clinging to it like a life raft, even as their bottom line is dropping out.

This is last week:

Target’s stock tumbled to a 52-week low on Wednesday, a day after Walmart shares soared to an all-time high — as the rival retailers’ earnings reports again underscored how their performance has diverged.

Target posted its biggest earnings miss in two years and cut its forecast. The company spoke about a “deceleration in discretionary demand” and blamed higher costs caused by the rush to move inventory ahead of the short-lived port strike in October.

On the company’s earnings call, CEO Brian Cornell described U.S. consumers who are “shopping carefully as they work to overcome the cumulative impact of multiple years of price inflation” and holding out for the best possible deal.
