In an open letter to American Catholics, former Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò endorsed former President Donald Trump and strongly denounced his opponent Kamala Harris as “an infernal monster who obeys Satan.”
Vigano, the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States from 2011 until 2016, went into hiding, in fear for his life in August of 2018, after accusing Pope Francis of covering up sexual abuse allegations against former cardinal Theodore McCarrick in an eleven-page bombshell letter. Previous to that, the archbishop publicized the Vatican leaks scandal of 2012, in which he revealed financial corruption in the Vatican.
On July 4, 2024, the whistleblower was found guilty of schism and excommunicated by the Vatican for allegedly making “public statements resulting in a denial of the elements necessary to maintain communion with the Catholic Church: denial of the legitimacy of Pope Francis, breaking of communion with him, and rejection of the Vatican Council II.”
In his letter, Vigano wrote that the choice in the November election is “between two radically opposed ways of conceiving the government of your Nation: you are called to choose between democracy and dictatorship, between freedom and slavery.”
