LA Times Editorial Page Editor Resigns Over No-Endorsement Order

The editorials editor of The Los Angeles Times has decided to resign from the paper in the wake of its decision not to endorse a presidential candidate in the 2024 race.

“I am resigning because I want to make it clear that I am not okay with us being silent,” Mariel Garza said in an interview with the Columbia Journalism Review. “In dangerous times, honest people need to stand up. This is how I’m standing up.” In addition to being the paper’s editorials editor, Garza was also a member of its editorial board.

At least Garza has the courage of his convictions, so give him that much credit. Otherwise ... meh. Newspaper editorial endorsements are entirely passé in recent decades. They may have mattered when editors didn't all hew to the radical-progressive fringe. Garza just endorsed George Gascón for another term as DA, just to make my point, and all indications are that Gascón will lose in a landslide.
