GOP Push for Citizenship Voting 'Deeply Opposed' By Dems

JONATHAN LEMIRE, MSNBC HOST: Another issue there on Capitol Hill, that's government funding deadline approaching. How close are we to a shutdown?

JAQUELINE ALEMANY, WASHINGTON POST: You know, it's really hard to say. As several lawmakers said yesterday, you know, we are obviously very close to a government shutdown.

We're only a week away. Government funding is going to end September 30th. The shutdown would take place to stop federal funding on October 1st.

But as Chuck Fleishman told some one of our colleagues yesterday, we know we're going to eventually get there. But how Republicans are going to get there right now, with a really brittle majority and entrenched divisions and ideological factions that have extremely different views of how government funding should be allocated, are going to ultimately come together is still unclear. But what Mike Johnson did set himself up for is a failed vote this week regarding a six-month extension of federal fundings that attached this bill that Donald Trump has been pushing, which would force voters in voting in federal elections to provide some sort of proof of citizenship.
